Goliath
Goliath was back at The Lucky Irish Number Seven Motor Lodge when Not Miller called. While going back to the scene of the crime was a horrible idea under normal circumstances, tonight it felt like the least bad option. It was the one place where answers might still hover in the stale air.
He and Greta had spent much too much time sitting at The Sorry Havenât Seen Him Tavern. Heâd knocked back long neck Budweisers and shots of something that was definitely not Patron, the burn of it sliding down his throat like bad decisions, while sheâd continued downing her Big K Cola and a brand of whiskey that originally came in a plastic bottle.
Normally lack of cash and credit interceded before they drank themselves blind, but Goliath was flush with the money Not Miller paid him.
Heâd told himself heâd pocket half and disappear, but if Greta hadnât passed out, they might have spent it all right then and there.
And if the bouncer hadnât talked him out of it, Goliath might have tried to drive to his cousin's cabin, even though he was having a hard time walking to the door. His legs felt like two cotton hoses; the room tilted every time he stood.
Goliath still hadnât liked the idea of going back to his place or Gretaâs. If this thing was the clusterfuck he suspected, he figured Not Miller might decide the best option was to start getting rid of anyone who knew heâd abducted the wrong FBI agent. It was a short list, but both Goliath and Greta were on it.
So, when the bouncer called him an Uber, Goliath had the driver take him to The Lucky Irish because it was still the best place to hide out. Rooms there were cheap and the other patrons had selective eyesight; good for staying visible and invisible at once.
The guy behind the desk did give him a funny look when he told him any room but 17, but he still complied.
Once inside the room, Goliath put Greta to bed and then tried to think what his next move should be. His drunken mind made all sorts of plans, including a pre-emptive strike where he killed both Not Miller and Bogdan before they came for him. Even in his inebriated state, he knew that was a bad idea, since for it to really work, there was an entire collective of Eastern European mobsters heâd have to kill as well.
He decided the next move should be sleep. It occurred to him as he laid down next to Greta, still wearing all his clothes, that heâd left an FBI agent's gun and phone in his truck parked at The Sorry Havenât Seen Him Tavern. He could see how this could be a problem especially if they towed his truck. He thought the bouncer said they wouldnât, but he also knew it wouldnât be the bouncer who made the decision.
The problem was, it was too far to walk, and even if he got there, he was still too wasted to drive.
